Health and wellness have always been an important aspect of our lives, but it took on a new meaning after the birth of our two sons. Our oldest son began struggling with anxiety at the age of six and we wanted to pursue alternative treatment options to pharmaceutical drugs. Once we found CBD, our son’s symptoms drastically improved, and we instantly became advocates of its treatment properties. Unfortunately, we struggled to find a brand that offered the purity, quality, testing, and transparency we were looking for.
During this time, we were also working to transfer centuries-old family farmland in North Carolina into our hands. Located between the sandhills and coastal plains, we realized this fertile soil presented ideal conditions for cultivating a product with a quality and transparency that can be traced from soil to shelf.
We brought together a team of experts from the agriculture, cannabis, and technology industries to help us create the purist premium CBD products. Charles developed an early love for farming while helping his grandparents and father tend to their farm in North Carolina, but never imagined he would return decades later to help run it. He honed a passion for sustainable land management while earning a bachelor’s degree in biology from Washington and Lee University and a master’s degree in environmental management from Duke University. He received a PhD in computational geography from UC Santa Barbara where he studied the impact of urbanization on agriculture in California’s Central Valley. Charles deepened his expertise in technology during his nearly 15 years in federal public service before he and Jen decided to return home to North Carolina to help reinvent his family’s farm. Charles has used his background to integrate cutting edge capabilities and automation that reduce environmental impact while ensuring purity in all aspects of Seventh Zen’s operations.
Jen’s grandparents also depended on agricultural production for their livelihood and this heritage instilled in her an early desire to preserve natural resources for generations to come. This passion drove her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Oregon and a master’s degree in environmental economics from Duke University. She expanded this focus through helping to drive IBM’s and The Home Depot’s efforts to implement more sustainable business practices and while working at Computer Sciences Corporation, where she helped develop the EPA’s environmental emergency response operational framework. Jen also spent many years in the federal public sector, but never lost her conservation mindset and passion for sustainability that is at the heart of Seventh Zen’s farming practices.
